N.E.W.T. Lessons

Welcome back, Astronomy students!

It takes real dedication to make it this far in a subject, so I want to thank you for putting up with me over all your years of study. You really make my day. :)

Now that you've reached your NEWT year, we're going to synthesize everything you've learned over the last four or five years into one year-long research project.

But don't stress out too much! I promise it will be fun!

Please choose one planet from any Sci-fi media (movie, TV show, book, comic, radio, etc.)

and write up an essay (800-1500 words) on this planet:

Tell me about its location, composition, ecology, population, society, technology, or other factors and data points that you think are relevant or interesting. Assume that I've never seen/read the source material before.

Exactly which aspects of the planet you cover are up to you, but I'd like to see you incorporate any scientific aspects you can, as this is an Astronomy class after all. :)

Some questions to help you get started:

Who lives there and how long has civilization been around?

Did it have to be terraformed for human life, and what did that entail?

Does it have an atmosphere/chemical composition different to Earth's?

If not, is the similarity explained?

How do the native species differ from Earth's to account for environmental differences?

What kinds of technology are required for day-to-day human life on the planet?

And of course: Is it likely that a planet like this could exist in real life?

Please turn your essay in to the Owlery by the end of Week 8, and feel free to stop by my office or PM me if you have any questions or concerns.
